Update: Ozzy is 6 weeks old!

Time flies when you’re a baby rhino! Ozzy is already six weeks old and ready to take on the world.

“While Ozzy is slowly becoming more independent, he still doesn’t venture too far from mom and follows her cues. Ozzy is very curious about his caretakers and enjoys coming up to say hello and greatly enjoys receiving belly scratches. The keepers have started working with him to get kiss prints and he is quickly following in the footsteps of his older brother, Otto, with his artistic abilities. He has started exploring the wallow with his feet, but we have yet to see him fully take a roll in the mud.

We provide our animals with choice and control over where they go in their habitats, if they are visible to guests on tour and if they want to interact during animal encounters; while we can’t guarantee anything, if Eesha is comfortable with it (as determined by her caretakers), guests may be able to say hi to Ozzy during our rhino encounters. These up close and personal experiences really allow our guests to appreciate these incredible creatures and we hope through these interactions, our rhinos inspire them to support conservation of rhinos in the wild.”

~Rhino Keeper Erika Defer

We can’t wait to see Ozzy’s personality continue to develop as he gets older. Be sure to follow us on social media for the latest cute videos and pictures!

In a world that can often feel chaotic, sometimes the best reminders of joy come in the tiniest of packages.

At Safari West, we are thrilled to introduce our newest (and furriest) little bundle of happiness—Arlo, a baby ring-tailed lemur!

Born to his attentive and loving mother, Betty, Arlo has already stolen our hearts. His bright eyes peek out curiously from her fur, his tiny hands grip tightly as she leaps from branch to branch, and his wobbly movements as he explores are enough to make anyone smile.

Ring-tailed lemurs, classified as an Endangered species by the IUCN, face challenges in the wild due to habitat loss and other threats. That makes every new birth a reason to celebrate—and Arlo is no exception. But beyond the conservation importance, his arrival is a simple and beautiful reminder of why we cherish the natural world. In times when the world feels uncertain, watching a baby lemur begin his journey is a small but meaningful source of happiness.

Meet our youngest laughing kookaburra chick, currently being hand-reared by our animal staff at Safari West. Early in the morning on July 7th, keepers found this little one in the nest box lying on their side, appearing weak, cold, and underweight. These parents are experienced and have successfully reared chicks in the past, so keepers were unsure why there appeared to be a lack of parental care for this individual. Due to their concerning condition, they were immediately removed from the habitat and brought down to our vet clinic where keepers began the process of warming them up and providing subcutaneous fluids. Several hours later, once they were warm and appeared slightly brighter, keepers began slowly syringe-feeding a nutrient-dense slurry made by mixing warm water with Harrison’s Recovery formula powder.

We still don’t know whether the baby is a male or female yet, so for the time being, they’ve been given the nickname: Lil Beeb.

On June 26, 2024, Safari West welcomed its 52nd giraffe calf, Safiri, whose name means “Journey” in Swahili. From the moment of her birth, Safiri’s journey became a fight for survival that would challenge and inspire the entire Safari West team.

In the early hours of that morning, animal caregivers discovered Safiri shivering, wet, and splayed. The animal team quickly assisted the calf by helping her position her legs appropriately and started a brief exam where they found her body temperature had plummeted to a dangerously low 92°F, far below the normal 101°F for giraffes. Initial blood tests revealed infection and critically low glucose levels.

Dr. Emily Cehrs, staff veterinarian for Safari West, working closely with Animal Collection Manager Nikki Smith and Animal Collection Assistant Manager Erika Defer, quickly developed a comprehensive treatment plan. They used blankets and a Bair Hugger warming system to stabilize Safiri’s temperature while administering IV fluids and antibiotics to combat infection and low glucose levels.

Otto was born to proud parents, Eesha and Ongava on April 2nd, 2023. Named in honor of Peter Lang’s father, Otto, our young rhinoceros holds a special place in the hearts of Safari West’s founders, Peter and Nancy. He is the perfect symbol to highlight Safari West’s enduring commitment to wildlife conservation, a cornerstone of our mission for over three decades.

Otto started his life at about 100 pounds, and at one year old he is over 1000 pounds. Our animal staff reported that there was a period of his first year when he was gaining five pounds a day! Otto’s main horn, a tiny bump at birth, is now prominently poking up above his mouth at 5 inches in length.

Spring has finally sprung at Safari West, painting our landscape with vibrant hues and lively energy! As rain showers come and go, and greenery erupts across our hills, we eagerly anticipate the sunny season ahead. This time of renewal is marked not only by the budding of flowers and the chirping of birds but also by the arrival of new life.

Amongst the array of newborns, one special addition stole the spotlight last year: Otto, our beloved rhino born on April 2, 2023. Otto represents the hope and promise of the future, embodying the spirit of resilience and wonder that Earth Day stands for. Named in honor of Safari West founder Peter Lang’s father, Otto’s journey symbolizes the interconnectedness of all life on our planet.

As our animal population flourishes and Otto celebrates his first spring, Safari West becomes a sanctuary of joy and celebration. We should commemorate Earth Day during this time of growth and birth. Earth Day serves as a poignant reminder of the delicate balance of nature and the responsibility we bear to protect it.

Spring is a season of transformation, where the earth awakens from its slumber and teems with life. From the emergence of new shoots to the return of migrating birds, each moment is a testament to the resilience and beauty of our planet. At Safari West, Earth Day holds special significance as we reflect on our role as stewards of this precious ecosystem.

Join us in honoring Earth Day and celebrating Otto’s inaugural spring at Safari West. Together, let’s pledge to cherish and protect our planet for generations to come. As guests of Safari West, you’re not just visitors; you’re partners in our mission to preserve the wonders of nature.

Cute Baby Rhino Alert!

Sound the (rhino) horns! Safari West is overjoyed to announce the birth of our first-ever Southern white rhino baby born to mother, Eesha, and father, Ongava.

The calf was born on Sunday, April 2nd at 5:30 pm PST. We feel fortunate and honored to contribute to the growth of global rhino populations and aid in conserving this magnificent protected species.

Our extraordinary animal care staff report the bouncing baby rhino calf is strong, nursing, and is bonding well with Mom. Safari West Veterinarian Dr. Emily Cehrs estimates the baby weighs around 100 pounds. We have not named the new baby yet!

This is a momentous event for us as the calf is the first of its species to be born at Safari West, Needless to say, it is a big deal to Eesha as well! She immediately showed good mothering instincts and has been attentive to her calf.

Cheers to the New Year and Happy 30th birthday to us! It’s hard to believe it’s been 30 since we opened our doors and invited the world to enjoy a taste of Africa on 400 acres of Mayacamas mountain wilderness that became our Sonoma Serengeti. It’s been 30 years and, in many ways, we’re just getting started!

30 years into this grand adventure we’re incredibly proud of how far we’ve come – and how far we can go. Today we not only entertain and educate thousands of wildlife enthusiasts each year, we also give back to our community in truly unique ways. We work closely with the Safari West Wildlife Foundation to provide an array of educational opportunities to underserved children everywhere. We also provide financial support to conservation organizations working to protect important species around the globe.

As we look ahead to the next 30 years, and beyond, it’s clear that our work will only grow increasingly important and relevant.  We are excited to be at the forefront of wildlife education and conservation, and grateful to work in a county and region that values these things as much as we do. Thank you for supporting us through our first 30 years, and for helping us preserve, share and celebrate the wonders of the natural world. We literally wouldn’t be here without you.
